Deposit Accounts

What do I need to bring with me to open a deposit account?

You only need to bring in one form of identification. It should contain your picture, current description, and signature and must be valid. Examples are a driver's license, passport, alien registration card, or tribal or military ID card. You will also need your social security number and an opening deposit.

Gate City Bank would be happy to help you switch banks. This includes switching any direct deposits or automatic payments currently set up and closing your old account when appropriate. To assist in moving your automatic payments, please bring a recent billing statement for each so we can obtain the merchant's address, your account number with that merchant, and a telephone number if we need to contact them.

My child would like to open a savings account, do they need ID?

If the parent will be a signer on the account, we will ask for identification from the parent. When a minor opens an account without a parent, we may use a student ID card. If they do not have one, identification by a family member, friend, banker, or teacher is acceptable. We will also need the social security number of the minor.

What is the minimum opening deposit for a checking account?

The minimum opening deposit is only $50 for all Gate City Bank personal and business checking accounts.

Savings Accounts

What is the difference between a Savings Account and a Money Market savings Account?

While both the Savings Account and the Money Market Savings Account are FDIC insured, there are three major differences between the two accounts.

The first difference is the difference in minimum balance requirement. For a Savings Account, the minimum balance requirement is only $50 if you currently have a checking account with Gate City Bank, or $200 if you do not have a Gate City Bank checking account. For children under 18 years of age, there is no minimum balance requirement. Our Money Market Savings Account has a minimum balance requirement of only $500.

The second difference is in interest earned. Money Market Savings Accounts have a higher minimum balance requirement, but will earn a higher interest rate than a Savings Account. Click here  to view our current rates for Savings Accounts and Money Market Savings Accounts.

The final difference is free checks are provided to access your funds on Money Market Savings Accounts. Checks are not available on Savings Accounts.

ATM and Check Card

How long will it take to receive my new ATM and Check Card?

You can expect to receive your new ATM and Check Card in 7-10 business days. Your personal identification number (PIN) is mailed 2 days after your card.

Is there an annual fee for an ATM and Check Card?

No! Gate City Bank does not charge our customers a fee to have an ATM and Check Card, they are FREE!

Which accounts automatically refund ATM surcharges?

Gate City Bank automatically refunds ATM surcharges on all checking and savings accounts. You do not need to bring in any receipts for this to take place.

When will Gate City Bank refund an ATM surcharge I've incurred?

Surcharges are refunded immediately following the posting of the surcharged ATM transaction to your account.

How can I change the Personal Identification Number (PIN) for my Gate City Bank ATM and Check Card?

You can call a Phone Banking representative, contact your local Gate City Bank office or visit any Gate City Bank-owned ATM.

If multiple owners on the account have an ATM and Check Card, how can I identify which card made a specific ATM withdrawal or point of sale (POS) purchase?

The last four digits of the card number will print with each ATM or POS transaction on your monthly account statement.

How many accounts can I have linked to my ATM and Check Card?

There is no limit. Any deposit account you are an owner on can be linked. You can specify one Primary Checking Account which will be used for point of sale purchases at merchants and accessible at any ATM. You can also specify one Primary Savings Account which will be accessible at any ATM. You can have unlimited Secondary Checking and Savings Accounts which will be accessible at Gate City Bank owned ATMs.

Can I access my Money Market Savings Account with my ATM and Check Card?

Yes. Please keep in mind Money Market Savings Accounts are subject to a government regulation which limits transfers or withdrawals by check, draft, Check Card or similar order to third parties, to no more than six per month.

Gate City Bank recommends Money Market Savings Accounts be linked as a Secondary Account accessible at Gate City Bank owned ATM's rather than a Primary Account. If linked as a Primary Account it is considered a Primary Checking and would be used for point of sale purchases at merchants and those transactions are subject to this limitation.

I used my ATM and Check Card at a merchant and it requested my personal identification number (PIN). Is this required?

Generally a PIN is not required when performing a point of sale purchase at a merchant. You can push “Credit” or tell the sales clerk you want to select “Credit”.

When do ATM and point of sale (POS) transactions post to my account?

When you use your personal identification number (PIN) to perform an ATM transaction or POS transaction, these post to your account immediately. If you push “Credit” and sign for a POS transaction, it will usually post to your account within a few days.

What is MasterCard Secure Code?

MasterCard Secure Code provides additional security for purchases made via the internet at participating merchants. You can register your ATM and Check Card at www.MasterCard.com. You will create a password that you will enter when making a point of sale purchase via the internet at any participating merchant.

Miscellaneous

What is Gate City Bank's routing number?

291370918

How do I find my account information at the bottom of a check?

I am a customer. Why do you ask for ID?

Whenever you come to the bank and request cash or a negotiable instrument, if the Teller who assists you does not know you, they will ask for identification. We do this to protect you and ensure we only allow withdrawals from authorized signers on the account.

I post-dated a check and it cleared my account. How could that happen?

When you post-date a check, it's an agreement between you and the payee of the check that they won't deposit it in their bank before the date of the check. If they bring it into their bank to cash or deposit it before the date of the check and their bank did not catch the date, it's possible that it will clear before you had intended it to. We have many items that clear all of our customer's accounts each day. It would be impossible to verify each and every item. If you notify us prior to the check being presented to Gate City Bank, we can place a stop payment on the check that will expire on the date you provide us.
